Today’s podcast episode 7 topic is all about negativity bias and the impact of negativity. So, what is it and why is it necessary to learn about this notion?
The negativity bias is a study made by many psychologists and neurologists. The theory is that the brain is five times more likely to remember the negative events that happened to you more than the positive events. The problem of negativity bias of the brain is the way it can impact your whole life–your psychology, your emotional well-being, your mood.
According to psychologist Rick Hanson, there is this thing called amygdala switch in our brain. If my brain is focused on negative things, that means it’s in the red switch, which indicates it’s in survival mode.
This means that I’m going from A to B but I have to survive the whole time I’m traveling. My stress level, my anxiety, my way of interacting with life is completely different than the other mode, which is the creation mode–the green switch in your brain.
In creation mode, everything is different. The way you see colors, the way you hear music, the way you understand points, how you study, work, and create–it’s different from survival mode. This is when you counteract the negativity bias. And in order to balance that, you have to do it for you because your brain will not do it for you.
